Walmart bought Asda long before this took place. Asda basically brought the brand over to the UK in the early 90's but it Asda never owned the brand they simply provided property and logistics retaining any share of profits, the Netto brand never went bust in the UK Asda just rebranded the majority of the sites as Asda locals keeping staff on. I think the reasons behind it were they felt there had been a big shift in people's shopping habbits - which for a short time was right as we saw the demise of Kwick save and Woolworths but then came the Aldi and Lidl boom lol. Netto has made a return under exactly the same arrangement only this time with sainsburys. Sainsburys havebt bought shares in it there simply providing facilities to establish the brand in the UK in return for a share of any profits. Following on from the huge success of Kwicksave and thier 'no frills' discount brands Asda was keen to muscle in on what was seen as the next big boom. They brought the Netto brand to the UK basically sourcing buildings/land and providing warehousing and logistics all for a share in any UK profits. Walmart bought ASDA and decided that with it's massive buying power it could provide the discounts in thier own stores rather than in sister outlets (netto) so the partnership was ended and the netto brand disapeared with tbe majority of Netto stores becoming Asda convience stores although some were leased to other companies by the building owners. Kwiksave was another to briefly return but now gone again RE: Duffer Meanswear - T42 PVM - 04/03/2016 15:01 TJ Hughes was another company that almost went completly however they seem to be making a comeback having just opened a store in Bootle and are going to open one in St Helens as well |
