Atlantic Container Line has ordered five new G4 class ships, each of 45,000 grt and 296 metres long. They will be giant container and roll on/roll off combination ships and will enter service in 2015.
They will replace the current 43100 GRT 294 metre five Class G3 ships. They will have their superstructure and bridge amidships. Although the ships are about the same size as those that they replace the upgraded design will allow them to carry twice as many containers and a third more trailers and cars.
The ships are being constructed at the Hudong shipyard, Shanghai, China for service in 2015.
These vessels dimensions mean that they can still get through Gladstone Lock, Bootle.

Not often we have vessels named after a lock but these new vessels will be called Gladamax meaning they are the maxium size for the lock. The current ones just have enough room with tugs but dont know if they will now
