Quoted on radio last week about the four silver buses that ran in the 60's A39 was one think the others were A2xx can't remember which ones ? Cheers Rob Day Formerly 51537 |

The later silver buses were Leylands, I think there were more than four - L294,295,303-309. These were part of the batch which stood unfinished in Edge Lane Works for years (L280-309). They had Crossley bodyshells which the Corporation should have finished but instead they were eventually finished by Metro Cammell. They weren't really silver, they were just unpainted as an economy measure. Looked great when new but soon looked shabby! |

Yes L280-309 went missing for a while,i am sure that A40 was not the only AEC with the silver livery with a couple more from P.A.R. or Speke Cheers Rob Day Formerly 51537 |

According to my tattered copy of Fleet History: Liverpool Corporation Transport, L294,5 300, 3-9 were the unpainted ones from the stored batch of Leylands completed by MCW and delivered at the end of 1961. These were fitted with four saloon heaters (two up and two down) from new. I remember vividly getting one of the painted ones (L293) to school one cold and frosty morning. I think, but am not certain, that AECs A228, 30-32 delivered 10/59 were also unpainted. No doubt there was a post-war surplus of melted down RAF aircraft at the time. As far as I can recall the Leylands operated out of Green Lane until 1968 when L305-9 were transferred to Litherland. The AECs spent most of their life at PAR, I think. |

There are photos of unpainted A221 & A228 in the Liverpool Transport (Vol. 5) book by Horne & Maund. A total of 5 unpainted AECs from this batch is said to have been built - presumably the others were A230-232, as you wrote. |
