For the past year, UK bus companies have been bailed out by the tax payer to the tune of hundreds of millions. If they truly wanted to be commercially independent, all of them would have ceased trading by now.

When this pandemic is over, instead of canvassing the residents of the major provincial cities whether they want franchising perhaps the residents of London or Belfast could be asked if they want the deregulated system that exists elsewhere in the UK.
