Asda basically brought the brand over to the UK in the early 90's but it Asda never owned the brand they simply provided property and logistics retaining any share of profits, the Netto brand never went bust in the UK Asda just rebranded the majority of the sites as Asda locals keeping staff on. I think the reasons behind it were they felt there had been a big shift in people's shopping habbits - which for a short time was right as we saw the demise of Kwick save and Woolworths but then came the Aldi and Lidl boom lol. Netto has made a return under exactly the same arrangement only this time with sainsburys. Sainsburys havebt bought shares in it there simply providing facilities to establish the brand in the UK in return for a share of any profits. |
