I had read that the Citaros had gone to the Maltese government as part of the deal. Either way they are scrapyard fodder as the cost of getting the back here would probably be more than they're worth.

No, all vehicles, excluding the Citaro Gs, and Arrivas Shares in Arriva Malta have transferred to the Maltese Government.

If they do put the network out to tender again, it will probably be won by another foreign Bus Operating Company, who will be hounded the same way Arriva was. Arriva was setting up a good network, with smart, presentable and accessible young vehicles.

If Government wants so much control, they should nationalise the Bus Network, like another Island Country. Bus Malta?

Route One magazine reckons different to you. All buses to the Maltese government it says, including the artics.

The costs incurred by Arriva to export the artics out to Malta must have been considerable, and very much doubt that the hassle of re-importing them to the UK for a sizeable financial outlay for them to consume valuable storage space somewhere to depreciate only to be sold onto a UK-based breaker appeals greatly to Arriva. A plethora of sister vehicles which remained here in England have started to make their final journeys to respective dealerships for breaking. Certainly more cost effective the leave them with the hands of the Maltese government, as per the suggestions outlined by RouteONE magazine.

I am not aware as to how reliable the 'Times of Malta' is but they have this in an article:

Thanks Garsty, that's where I got my information from also.

People also have to remember that they're of no use to Transport Malta either. Why would they take them?

I'd be inclined to believe Maltese Information over Route One.

It has been confirmed by the Transport Minister that Transport Malta has taken ownership of all ex Arriva Vehicles, including the Mercedes-Benz Citaro Gs. Transport Malta did not want these vehicles, and the opposition is blaming it on poor negotiating, the Maltese taxpayer now owning 68 redundant bendy buses.

On the 'Malta Public Transport' website is the information about the sale of the Mercs:

They seem keen to get them off Malta, as they must be gone before 28 days is up! Not a lot of time to ship out 81 buses.
