RE: Go Goodwins
They should scrap such policies altogether, there's no justification for mandating the replacement of a perfectly roadworthy bus that complies with all relevant accessibility and emissions rules, and then effectively passing the bill to the taxpayer. Age is a very weak proxy for quality or condition. But even by the standards of age limit policies, this one seems more ridiculous than most — specifying a fixed point within a calendar year would imply that if two buses were registered just one day apart, then one of them might have to be withdrawn a full year earlier than the other. |

Age is a very weak proxy for quality or condition. In the main cities and towns there should be a policy to remove older less green vehicles from the roads. Not that age alone determines how environmentally friendly a bus is. Given an August date is mentioned I suspect vehicles used on school services are one of the main reasons for the 15 year age requirement, as that wouldn't mean an operator would find their vehicle is non-compliant part way through an academic year. In the 1990s it was commonplace for coach hire companies to get a small number of 1970s Leyland deckers, which had little value and then to use them solely on school contracts. |

RE: Go Goodwins
Based on bustimes it seems the Altrincham services today were operated by the 3 MMCs, one of the Metrocities, one of the Solos and one of the Versas with them switching between routes, rather than staying on the same route all day. For instance, 1945 has been on 288, 88, 282, 283, 284 & 287 journeys today. The Ashton area services have seen a Versa, Metrocity and Evo today. |
