Lancashire Triangle Electrification
Electrification for the Lancashire Triangle has been under way for some time with Castlefields to Ordsall Lane complete and energised. A lot of work is complete between Kenyon Junction and Newton-le-Willows whilst work is proceeding over Chat Moss.
At the Merseyside end the work has been concentrated on the overbridges.
Plans have now been released for the railway in the Huyton Junction/Roby areas. The plan with electrification is to put a third line in making an island platform at each station, and providing access which includes re-opening the old subways and installing lifts. A fourth platform is likely under Northern Hub proposals.

This extra line and platform is an excellent initiative as it will cater for the likely future increased use following electrification.

It will also give more operational flexibility for expresses, locals and freights

Is this going to be three or four lines through Roby and Huyton , dont seem to be able to tell at the moment .

When reading on the internet when first mooted the plan was for three lines , but had heard that the plans changed to four lines after the Northern Hub proposals had gone through.

The initial plan is for three lines through Roby and Huyton, and when the hub is completed, then a fourth line (on the far disused platform) will be built IF DEEMED NECESSARY at that time. AFAIK this is not a definite at the moment.
Interestingly, the two current lines will both be Liverpool bound, and the new third (and possible) fourth line will be Wigan/Manchester bound, completely different from the layout in BR days

Thinking a bit further ahead to when all the lines that are going to be electrified in the North West that we may see a service between Liverpool and Edinburgh / Glasgow , this service may even be combined with existing services from Manchester , probably at Preston.

Electrification does give some interesting possibilities down the line .

The fourth track is part of the Northern Hub proposals, which are being implemented by 2019. So between 2014 and 2019 there will be three lines.

Also, concrete bases for masts have now appeared between Huyton and Eccleston Park.

Wiring is complete between Ordsall Lane and Parkside Junction except for a small stretch in the Eccles area.
No masts are up yet on Stage 2, west of Earlestown. However a lot of masts are up between Huyton and Ince Moss, which is Stage 3. It is assumed that the opportunity to erect these was taken during the recent line closure of the line between St Helens and Springs Branch.
Also being electrified is the Bamfurlong Curve which will be useful for diversions if the line between Huyton and Newton-le-Willows is blocked.
