The black cabs already have Stanley Street which is only about 200 yards from Williamson Square, Great Charlotte Street and North John Street so could give up Williamson Square, After all if you are expecting passengers from South Liverpool to walk for their buses taxi passengers could too.

I suspect that a lot of routes coming down London Road (10, 12, 13, 14, 15etc) will turn right rather than left and use the Churchill Way Flyover - the one that is under-used and under constant threat of demolition - to get to Dale Street. As far as I know, Churhill Way is not part of any bus route but I often see buses in service using it at peak times. It might not please the passengers but it will be better than sitting in a lengthy jam.

I wonder if it's worth arguing the fact that there is the possibility that too much of the city centre is pedestrianised?

Remember when we had less buses going into the city centre than now but we had four bus stations. Skelhorne Street, Mann Island, Pier Head and CBS. Plus the gyratory when there was less chaos for buses running through although maybe a bit more dangerous for bus users. Now we have one inadequate one and one not really ideally placed, whilst useless fat Joe is getting buses away from Mann Island because he is getting an apartment.

It is to some extent, hence my earlier point about making Whitechapel in front of Met Quarter back into a road and turning the bottom half of Stanley St into something similar to Sir Thomas St so that Wirral and North Liverpool services can run from these two streets instead of Queen Sq. A restructuring of Sir Thomas St and opening Stanley St to buses with a stop or two in front of Met Quarter on Whitechapel would create layover spaces for 4 buses; 2 at the Victoria St end of Stanley St alongside Metquarter, and two in the same position on Sir Thomas St, while creating upto 6 additional bus stops. If the Stanley St -> Whitechapel road was made into Buses only (ie: no taxis) for the main part of the day (0700-1900) then that would speed up buses for Wirral and North Liverpool as well as freeing up half of Queen Square.

This, coupled with smart traffic lights around the city centre, would make traffic flow a lot better for both buses and cars.

I'd also consider moving the lay-by next to the Royal Court to the left by about 11-12 feet, as there is a lot of wasted pavement there, then move the central barrier over by the same amount, creating a second lane for buses to leave Queen Square so that the likes of the 10 can use the left lane for London Rd and the 79s can use the right for Lime Street, while the single lane on entry from Lime St is maintained, although the lay-by could be extended right up to the central crossing so that another bus can fit in.

People would get used to it in time as they have done with other services.

This is the most sensible and easily done change that could be done

there won`t be any re opening of pedestrianised streets to buses, under the current regime it`s likely more of the city will become pedestrainised.

And Queen Square is no longer that close to the main hub of Liverpool`s Shopping Centre , Hanover St and Liverpool One Bus Station is closer to where the major shops now are.

Don't forget that there was also Old Haymarket/St John's Lane for the all joint services (the current 52, 55, 56, 58) towards Bootle and Netherton. At its peak that would account for at least 25 departures per hour. Also, didn't several GL routes (12, 18) used Sir Thomas Street as a terminus?

That could work although in hindsight that would create a bottleneck at the crossing with two lanes merging into one

I think Halton's 14 and the 78 and 79/79C/79D could be moved to Liverpool ONE running via Hanover Street and Lime Street - but I think the 6/7 and Halton's 61 would be better running from Queen Square as well as other services serving Huyton

If south Liverpool services were focused on Liverpool ONE it could free up the use of Stand 1 at Queen Square. I would do the following:

Stand 1: 6, 7, 8/9 and Halton 61
Stand 2: 15
Stand 3: 10B
Stand 4: 10/10A
Stand 5/6: 12/13, Arriva 14 and 18
Stand 7/8: Stagecoach 14, 17, 19 and 20/21

The next problem you would have if you sent all of those buses up Hanover Street and Elliot Street loop would add to the slow moving traffic in Hanover Street , yet another road not really built for the amount of buses used now let alone if you add any more .

Oh and another thing bus stop allocation in the Elliot Street loop , its bad enough that rail replacement buses can not be found a stop nearer to Liverpool Central than in front of St George's Hall.
